About

Dr. Shelley Leutschaft

“The book of life is filled with incoherent riddles. Life’s true lessons are inscribed in a corner of the margin.”
– Jonathon Lockwood Huie

Dr. Shelley offers solution-focused interventions and psychotherapy for individuals interested in creating the best life possible. I specialize in interventions for justice-involved individuals and the professionals who serve them; persons experiencing co-occurring conditions; and victims of emotional, physical, and sexual violence and their families. Educated in clinical psychology, I have worked with forensic populations for over 20 years via state and federal prisons, civil commitment facilities serving MI-CD and SO populations, and community-based hospitals. Maintaining a full-time position with the Minnesota Department of Corrections, I understand the intricacies of working with individuals whose lives have been impacted by the legal system, those victimized, and the professionals who serve our communities. My understanding of and compassion for the human condition has helped countless individuals and their families engage in the change necessary to create a life of purpose.

Teletherapy

BENEFITS OF TELETHERAPY

Proven to overcome several barriers associated with receiving mental health services, teletherapy expands the client-provider services area, reduces the cost of receiving services, decreases travel and wait times, reduces time away from work and family, improves client-provider engagement and overall satisfaction of the experience, and has been shown to reduce the negative symptoms associated with receiving ongoing community-based services.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Personal development is introspective–you explore the self–to better understand your unique personality, potential, strengths, limitations, talents, skills, hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Personal development improves self-awareness and personal identity, defines and develops your skills and talents across multiple areas, helps you realize dreams and aspirations, and enhances the overall quality of life experience–all of which help you achieve more than you ever believed possible. Work with me to improve your self-awareness, identify and overcome blocks to self-identity that impact your sense-of-self, and develop skills to enhance your life.
EMPOWERMENT
More than becoming confident in managing your life and claiming your rights, empowerment can mean different things to different people. A personal experience– happening to you and not about you–empowerment can be merely acquiring knowledge and special skills up to and including taking responsibility for one’s self and his or her life. Your overall sense-of-self (self-esteem and self-confidence) is based upon self-empowerment. It is about responsibly taking control of your life by making decisions based on identified wants and needs. True empowerment exists through the conversion of your intentions into purposeful action toward achieving and creating–bringing your hopes and dreams into being.
BEHAVIORAL CHANGE
Behavioral change is best approached with an open mind and a willingness to explore what has and hasn’t historically achieved the desired outcome. Simply put, what worked and what didn’t in getting what you thought you wanted?
  • The first step to behavioral change is acknowledging a problem exists, or at least that there is something in the way between you and the desired outcome. Awareness is the key to insight. Without insight, there is a lack of value assigned to the impact of the problem.
  • The second step is the desire to change. A desire for change is not synonymous with motivation. It is not enough to think about change, you must decide the change has value and then create action to achieve the intended change.
  • The third step is a belief in your ability to effect change. It is almost impossible to embrace the steps necessary to create change when you do not believe you are capable of achieving it. Once achieved, you consistently employ the measures necessary to maintain the gains of change you have achieved.

Clients

POPULATIONS SERVED

EMPOWERMENT + MOTIVATION = CHANGE
Are you motivated to enact positive change and create a life of purpose? I serve clients committed to addressing interpersonal problems by exploring, identifying, and challenging ineffective patterns of problem-solving and maladaptive coping.
  • Individuals, Couples, Families, Groups
  • Ages 14+
  • Victims of domestic and/or sexual violence
  • Justice-Involved Adolescents and Adults
  • Probationers, Parolees, Court-Ordered
  • Correctional and Law Enforcement Personnel
Interpersonal change requires a blend of factors expressing in unison–internal and external–an intricate dance made manifest through you. Self-expression is ultimately a choice–the sum total of your experiences, core beliefs, and the decisions you make as a result of who you have become. How you choose to express behaviorally reveals your inner self without speaking a word.
